Paul McCartney’s bass line on “Getting Better“ is simply genius, it was then, and it still is now, 50 years later. The entire song and bass line are completely diatonic, the harmonies only use 5 degrees, the first, second, third, fourth and fifth. And yet, somehow, the bass, bouncing around and playing different notes against different degrees creates the perfect bittersweet blend. I have no doubt that he was influenced at this time by the Motown sound, the syncopation of his bass line is a sure sign, but the choice of notes is still pure McCartney genius.
